Happy ever after promised in Coronation Street as Carla and Lisa’s wedding is very soon

Now that Carla Connor (Alison King) has escaped her cupboard prison in Coronation Street, there is no stopping her when it comes to making massive life decisions – including diving straight into marriage with the woman she loves, apparently.

If recent scenes were anything to go by, we’d have thrown our hats and rice in the bin. Things aren’t exactly going great for Carla and her darling detective, DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) right now.

While Carla was locked in the aforementioned cupboard, Lisa was moving on with her life, having been led to believe that the factory boss had jetted off to Lanzarote for some winter sun and a cocktail or three to mend her broken heart following their break-up.

To add insult to injury, Lisa’s idea of moving on was returning to dead-wife-who-actually-isn’t-dead-it’s-a-long-and-confusing-story Becky Swain (Amy Cudden), who also happened to be the woman holding Carla captive!

It was Becky who had split up the beloved couple in the first place, with Carla able to see through her lies and manipulation of Lisa almost immediately.

Unfortunately, having suffered years of grief, Lisa was easily blindsided by Becky, and ignored Carla’s warnings that there was more to the dodgy copper than met the eye.

Becky’s main goal was to reclaim what she believed was rightfully hers – her family – and with Carla standing in the way of that, she gradually took more extreme actions to drive her away.

Her efforts included everything from kissing Lisa to staying the night while Carla was in Ireland, with things culminating in Becky organising an attack on DI Costello (Daon Broni) – the only other person who seemed to know exactly what Becky had going on – to keep him quiet.

Through all of this, Carla decided she couldn’t take any more and called things off between her and Lisa, just weeks after their engagement. However, she wasn’t just going to sit back and let Becky steal her woman – she had a plan to expose her for who she really was.

And that’s how she ended up bound and gagged in an airing cupboard for Christmas. We’ve heard of hiding presents in the cupboard, but your widow-who-isn’t-a-widow’s ex-fiancée is a new one on us…

Thankfully, salvation came for Carla in the form of Kit Green (Jacob Roberts), who managed to track Carla down after Becky moved her to a shipping container and left her there to die.

With Becky on the run with Lisa and Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin), it was a race for Carla to contact Lisa and let her know the truth.

Once Becky had been arrested in the most girlboss move we’ve ever seen Lisa make – and after causing a multi-vehicle pile-up so enormous it needed two soaps to cover it – things went back to normal for Swarla. Right? Right?

Sadly not, because Becky’s manipulation has continued to have ripple effects through both Carla and Lisa’s lives.

While under lock and key, Carla was forced to listen to Becky gloat about how she was sleeping with Lisa in excruciating detail. Though Carla snapped back with the argument that Lisa had only chosen Becky because she had her locked away, it became clear once she returned home that this had been playing on her mind more than she’d originally let on.

When Lisa confirmed that Becky had slept with her, Carla was devastated and walked out, refusing to hear any apologies or explanations.

So, you can see why we’re sceptical that a wedding is just around the corner, right?

Well, according to Executive Producer Kate Brooks, that’s exactly what’s coming up.

‘Becky was an absolute obstacle thrown their way. Now they’ve dealt with Becky and her true colours have been revealed for all to see and Lisa’s realised the extent of the manipulation and the lies that Becky’s told, we’ll see them starting to make their way back to each other,’ Kate promised.

‘Obviously there’s a lot to get past but they love each other and that love never faltered throughout it all. The love remained strong, it was the circumstances that got in the way.

‘Now that the ghost of Becky has finally been put to bed they can move forward with their lives and they can look forward to their future together.’

It seems that the future for Swarla involves marriage, and it’s sooner rather than later, as Kate went on to reveal.

‘They’re engaged, so wedding bells are certainly ringing in the not too distant future and they’ll get their happy ever after. They’ll get the chance to finally be free from Becky and free from the drama that surrounded that story and be happy and content with each other.
